Follow-Up Interview with Paulie Harraka
Mooresville, NC | September 2, 2010

Now that some time has gone by after Paulie Harraka's Nationwide premier with NEMCO Motorsports in Montreal, we wanted to circle back with him to see what he has to say.

NEMCO: Now that you've had some time to look back at the experience in Montreal, what what your takeaway?

Paulie: Driving the Exide Batteries Nationwide car in Montreal was a great learning experience for me, but a frustrating one. The name of the game at races like that is to be "patiently aggressive": patient enough to not be in the middle or a wreck, but aggressive enough to be ahead of the wrecks when they happen. Unfortunately, I was too patient and ended up with no place to go when my teammate, Joe Nemechek, was spun. It was really frustrating to have our day cut that short.

NEMCO: And how was it starting school this week?

Paulie: Getting into class at Duke was crazy! I was working on minimal sleep all day Monday, and have been running wide open since then. Fortunately, the first week of class was great: I'm in interesting classes with great professors. It's great to see all of the friends that I've missed this summer and get back into the swing of life at Duke.

Paulie's next race will be September 12th at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT. You can find out more about Paulie by visiting his website, following him on Twitter, or becoming a fan on Facebook.

Paulie Harraka Will Drive the 87 Exide Batteries Chevy for NEMCO Motorsports in Montreal...But Who Is Paulie?
Mooresville, NC | August 25, 2010

By now we've all heard his name, maybe seen his website, maybe we even now follow him on Twitter or are his fans on Facebook, but who is the man who will be taking the helm of the 87 Exide Batteries Chevy this weekend in Montreal?

Here are some of the published facts about Paulie:

- he is currently 3rd in the NASCAR K&N Pro West Series points
- he has finished in the Top 3 in each of the last 3 K&N Pro West Series Road Course races
- he was chosen for the Drive for Diversity program in 2007
- he is in the D4D Reality Show: Changing Lanes, which debuts this Wednesday 9/1 on the BET Network
- he was the first D4D candidate to win a track championship in 2008 at All-American Speedway (Calif.)
- he is a full time student in Duke University, where he will start his Junior year on Monday, the morning after the race
- his home town is Wayne, NJ

But we wanted to find out a little more about Paulie, so we asked him a few questions on a variety of topics. We caught him on his drive from New Jersey to his apartment near Duke, where he will unpack some then start packing for his morning flight to Montreal.

NEMCO: How did you first meet Joe Nemechek?

Paulie: I first met Joe when we were both racing at Infineon in June. I raced the NASCAR K&N Pro West Series race on Saturday and finished 2nd, and Joe was there to race the Sprint Cup car on Sunday. We just started talking after the race, and pretty quickly started talking about Montreal.

NEMCO: Why are you excited about Montreal being your Nationwide debut?

Paulie: I do pretty well at road courses - the driver matters most on the road courses, so that is a good place to start.

NEMCO: With a track as difficult as Montreal, what do you hope to accomplish?

Paulie: We'll just take it a step at a time. In practice we'll learn about the car and work on the car to make it the best we can. In the race I'll focus on running with the other drivers, then working in pit strategy and adjustments during the race. The goal is to finish in the top 10.

NEMCO: After the race, you are heading to Duke University to start your Junior year. What will your Monday after the race look like?

Paulie: Full. I have a 7:30 flight Monday morning, and my first class is at 10:00. Monday is a full day of classes. I'm a full time student and I am taking as much as I can this semester.

NEMCO: How do you balance the time you need for school with the time you need to be successful in racing?

Paulie: A lot of time management and being surrounded by great people that give me opportunities, including Joe giving me the opportunity to drive in Montreal and Exide sponsoring me. When the opportunities come up, you just have to make it happen. Sleep gets slighted, social life gets slighted, but you just do it. A little caffeine, a little less sleep, and you just make it work.

NEMCO: Duke is a great school for athletics as well as academics; how much do you get to enjoy sports while there?

Paulie: One of my best friends is the captain of the soccer team, so we go out and see soccer games, and lacrosse games too. Over the summer we drove out to the lacrosse national championship, then hurried up and drove back as that was during my summer session.

NEMCO: How fun are the Duke basketball games? Did you go to any of the NCAA tournament games earlier this year?

Paulie: Yeah they are a lot of fun. For the tournament we watched the games at the Cameron Indoor Stadium - where Duke plays their regular season games - they put the game on the 4 big TV screens in the middle of the arena; that was fun.

NEMCO: Being from New Jersey, you've got to have a favorite food that you miss from there while traveling; what is it?

Paulie: Bagels and pizza - you can't get them like that anywhere else. On my last day home before heading back to school, I had bagels in the morning, and went out to get pizza on my last night home. I put a picture of the pizza on Twitter.

NEMCO: How has being part of the Drive for Diversity program helped your career so far?

Paulie: Drive for Diversity facilitated my move to Bill McAnally Racing in 2007. In 2006, they held a combine and picked 25 drivers to run laps, and I was the fastest of those drivers, which led me to BMR. I've been in the program for 4 years, and the help and support that I have gotten along the way have allowed my career to progress and get opportunities such as driving for NEMCO in Montreal.

NEMCO: Heading to Montreal for the race sounds exciting; have you been there before?

Paulie: No, I have never been there, but I am stoked as I hear it is an awesome city and that the racetrack is a great one to race on. I am very excited and maybe I will get some time to look around while there.

NEMCO: Can you speak French?

Paulie: No

NEMCO: Anything else you want to add?

Paulie: I would just like to thank Joe and NEMCO Motorsports for giving me the opportunity and Exide for sponsoring me. We'll have Exide's "Start Positive, Stay Positive" slogan on the back of the car and the crew has T-shirts with this also. Fans can visit the website startpositivestaypositive.com to learn more. We are looking forward to a good run in Montreal.

All of us at NEMCO have enjoyed getting to know Paulie during this short time, and we are certainly looking forward to seeing how he will do this weekend and in upcoming future events.

World’s Fastest “Student Driver” to make Nationwide Debut in Montreal
Mooresville, NC | August 25, 2010

When the NASCAR® Nationwide Series heads north of the border for its annual visit to Canada this weekend, one of the series’ most experienced race teams will have a fresh face behind the wheel. Paulie Harraka, in his sophomore season in the K&N Pro Series West and his junior year at Duke University, will pilot the Exide® Batteries #87 Chevrolet for NEMCO Motorsports at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal on Sunday, August 29. The race will air live on ESPN 2 at 2:30 PM EST.

This event marks the NASCAR Nationwide Series debut for Harraka, who is a member of the Drive for Diversity program. Harraka, the winningest driver in the program, won the 2008 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Championship in 2008, followed by NASCAR K&N Pro Series West Rookie of the Year in 2009. Currently, he is 3rd in K&N Pro Series West points standings.

After finishing 2nd in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West race at Infineon this summer, Harraka caught the eye of Joe Nemechek, NEMCO Motorsports owner. “I’ve been impressed with how he’s grown as a race car driver – particularly on the road courses,” said Nemechek, who has won 16 Nationwide Series races. “Paulie has always seized opportunities presented to him, whether it’s a scholarship at Duke or a seat in my race car. It's going to be an honor to give a talented ‘Drive for Diversity racer’ a ride in one of our cars.”

To make his Nationwide debut for such a storied team is a dream come true for Harraka. “I love road course racing and can’t wait to compete at Montreal,” said an exuberant Harraka. “I can’t express how grateful I am to Joe and Andrea Nemechek for the opportunity to drive their racecar in Montreal. And, to have our car branded with Exide® Batteries – a symbol of top performance and rich racing heritage—makes it even more special.”

The NAPA Auto Parts 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will kick off a busy week for Harraka. Immediately following the race, Harraka will fly to Durham, North Carolina to begin his first class of his junior year at Duke University. On Wednesday, September 1, Harraka will be featured in Changing Lanes, a reality series that follows the Drive for Diversity program drivers as they chase their NASCAR dreams. The premiere episode will air at 8:00 PM EST on BET.

“Paulie Harraka is an incredible new talent, making Exide’s affiliation with NASCAR® even more exciting,” said Bruce Cole, President – Transportation Americas, Exide Technologies. “Not only does this sponsorship afford us additional opportunities to showcase Exide’s Official Battery of NASCAR® status, it also aligns our Company’s premium-quality, track-proven portfolio of battery products with the brand-loyal NASCAR audience.”

About Paulie Harraka Paulie Harraka is, in the words of ESPN columnist Ed Hinton, “a meteor that hasn’t hit your lawn yet. A bullet train headed down your driveway. Johnson to Pilot #87 for NEMCO at Nashville NASCAR Nationwide Race
Nashville TN | June 1, 2010

Nashville, TN-- Jarit Johnson Racing, Inc and NEMCO Motorsports announced today that driver Jarit Johnson will pilot the #87 Chevrolet in the Federated Auto Parts 300 at Nashville (TN) Superspeedway on Saturday June 5th. It will be Johnson's fourth Nationwide Series start and first ever at the Nashville track. Johnson and NEMCO have sponsorship opportunities still available for the event and hope to secure more funding. For now the team plans to run as much of the race as possible under their current limited budget.

"I appreciate Joe [Nemechek] asking me to make the start at Nashville. Funding has been tough this year and I haven't been racing as much as I'd like to. This will be a good opportunity to gain some experience at Nashville and get back into the seat," said Johnson. "Hopefully it will bring some momentum and we'll be able to put more races together."

The NASCAR Nationwide Series is returning to Nashville Superspeedway for the second time in 2010, but this time, under the lights for a rare Saturday night race. Nashville Superspeedway, built in 2000, is one of only three concrete tracks on the NASCAR circuit. The pavement, consisting of 7,500 cubic yards of concrete, was placed full-width for the entire length of the track by a concrete paving machine that was specially constructed for this project. The first Nationwide Series race was held in April 2001 with Greg Biffle winning.

Fans coming to the event will be able to attend the "Race Fest for Flood Relief." This event is an exclusive autograph session and auction featuring a large number of series regulars while directly helping those in need as a result of the recent Nashville area floods. A Nationwide Series driver autograph session is scheduled from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, June 5 at the Nationwide Insurance display in the Expo area located outside of Gate 3 at the Superspeedway. Fans attending the autograph session will be asked to make a canned food or monetary donation at the track to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee in order to receive admission to the autograph session. A limited number of wristbands will be issued in advance of the autograph session beginning at 11 a.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.

The first of two practice sessions begin at 5pm on Friday June 4th with final practice starting at 6:45pm. Qualifying is scheduled to begin at 3:05pm on Saturday June 5th. The Federated Auto Parts 300 green flag will drop at 7:00pm.
